'Grandma's Horse' Artist: PJ Martin

Grandma's Horse

Even after the invention of the automobile, in the early 1900’s, there were more horse and cow (oxen) powered vehicles (wagons) than cars and trucks.  Many people rode horses and cows to go to work, store or school.  But, just like today, what you rode in on was sometimes a source of pride and joy.  This was the case with this horse for sure!

My grandfather was a hardworking, rather reserved farmer, with a 15 year, younger wife – who he was very proud of.  Every week, many of the wives would take a load of goods they had harvested, baked, sewed, ect to the market to sell.  Some came in on big cows or older horses…but my grandfather sent his wife to town on a young, beautiful, brown horse that was as gentle and fair as she was.

His message was a strong one to other men who probably noticed the young woman coming to sell her goods, which was he could take care of his young bride better than any of them!

This painting is in honor of that story that Grandma passed down over the years!
